This story, one of the longest taken from Strange Tales in Fiction and Fact, is of a small boy called Simon, visiting his Granny for Christmas. He receives an unusual gift from Santa Claus. The gift isn’t what he expects and Santa Claus isn’t who he thinks.

Description

Stars and Crystals takes place one Christmas when a boy called Simon, together with his parents, is visiting Granny in her large old Victorian house in the countryside. Late on Christmas Eve, too excited to sleep, he can’t believe his eyes when he sees Santa Claus standing in the garden below his window and beckoning to him. In the morning, eager to unpack presents from his Christmas stocking, he finds an unusual package containing something he didn’t ask for. As events unfold in a bustling household with Annie, the friendly cook, his inebriated Uncle Bartholomew, spiteful Cousin Sarah, and Jack, the menacing stable hand, Simon discovers a gift from an unexpected source.

Reader comments:

I have just finished Stars and Crystals – it is such a tender story of someone’s muse. I love it!

I think it might be my favourite so far, but I’m not finished yet!
